Klarion is an underrated character from DC. I believe that is such a shame since he is one of my favorite characters which is why I decided to write about him. Writing about Klarion is a pretty hard task because he unfortunately has so few appearances. But the little appearances he does have are captivating since you don’t expect what the trickster is gonna do.
Giving a general characterization is not easy since his appearance and backstory vary widely from writer to writer. Because of his chaotic and rebellious nature he most of the time aligns as an antagonist, though there have been times he has sided with the heroes. He is always depicted as an incredibly powerful magic user. He has a cat familiar called Teekl who is as mischievous as him.

Klarion was created by Jack Kirby in 1973. His first appearance was in issue #7 of “The Demon” series. In this version of the character, he’s from Beyond Country, an alternate dimension where witches live. However, he has been sentenced to death for being too ambitious and gaining power over his elders. To escape he travels to the dimension where the comics take place. He tries to control the protagonist of the series, Etrigan, to guard him until he can conquer the elders. But instead Etrigan sends him back to his dimension.

Later his backstory has been changed and explored by Grant Morrison and Frazer Irving in “Seven Soldiers of Victory”. In this version he comes from Limbo Town which is an underground community beneath New York City whose citizens are half sheeda half human hybrids. He is curious about what lies beyond Limbo Town, which is highly discouraged by his elders. He finally decides to run away and finds himself in New York City and there he is found by Melmoth. Melmoth, thanks to Klarion, learns about Limbo Town and tries to conquer it. Klarion temporarily turns into a monstrous form called a horigal to stop him and succeeds.

He was also one of the main antagonists in “Young Justice: Sins of Youth”. He is summoned by the Agenda. He turns all the adult heroes to children and the younger heroes into adults. The heroes get a hold of Teekl and threaten him to turn everyone back or they would kill Teekl. Klarion accepts but before he can turn everyone back the Agenda sends a clone of Klarion that is an adult. Because Klarion has been separated from Teekl for a long time he has less magic left. So he can’t defeat the clone but the heroes help him and after the clone is beaten he turns everybody back.

More recently he has been an antagonist in “Young Justice: the Animated Series”. That is where I came across him first. In this version he is a Lord of Chaos, in other words he is chaos personified. He emerged at the dawn of the universe 16 billion years ago. His biggest weakness is that he needs his familiar Teekl as an anchor to the earthly plane. In the series he is one of the leaders of the Light.
There are a few more appearances I won’t talk about since this article might be too long and I couldn’t find all the comics. Such as “Klarion” series of the New 52 and “Countdown to Final Crisis”. I recommend reading all these comics. The ones I haven’t mentioned and even the ones I summarized in this article since I don’t believe I was able to do these stories justice by summarizing them in one paragraph. So please read them on your own and I hope you enjoy Klarion as a character as much as I do.
